In 2017, Ms. Peggy Helmerich made it possible for the David Allan Hubbard Library to extend it's academic reach to patrons near and far. Here, you can get to know Ms. Helmerich, see the items that were purchased with her grant, and a before and after photo gallery.

Biography

Born Peggy Josephine Varnadow on March 18, 1928, in Columbia, Mississippi, Ms. Peggy Dow eventually grew up in Louisiana. There, she majored in drama in college and appeared in several plays during that time. In February 1949, Ms. Dow was approached by a talent agent and cast in a TV show, which lead to Universal offering her a seven year contract. She co-starred that year with Scott Brady in Undertow, and from then, the roles kept growing. Other movies she co-starred in were Woman in Hiding (1950), Harvey (1950), and Bright Victory (1951). Peggy recounts during this time listening to Charles Fuller in his Old Fashioned Revival Hour program while in Hollywood. After three years, Peggy married Walter Helmerich in 1951, relocated to Tulsa, Oklahoma, and raised a family.

The David Allan Hubbard Library and Fuller Theological Seminary thank Ms. Helmerich for her grant and for remembering our founder and his radio program while she was in California.
