Importing EndNote Records to Zotero Guide

Importing to Zotero with Attachments:
If you are importing your records from EndNote to Zotero AND those records have PDF attachments, follow these steps:

  • -Save EndNote library file as: “Text File (*.txt)” in the “Save as type” dropbox. Select “RefMan (RIS) Export” in the “Output style” dropbox. Save the file where you can find it later on
  • -Move PDFs to a central file folder (for ease of access, the Desktop works well)
  • -Open the EndNote file .txt and search for the line: internal-pdf://
  • -Replace that line with the file path of where the PDFs are located. If it is on your desktop, it might look like: file://desktop/PDFfile/. You can find the file path by right-clicking on the folder and selecting “Properties” or clicking on the file and the pressing Command-i for the file location
  • -Make sure the end of the new file path has a forward slash (/) and replace all instances of internal-pdf://
  • -SAVE .txt FILE!!!
  • -Import EndNote record file to Zotero

Removing Field Tags from EndNote Citations in Word:

– To do this, go to the EndNote tab in Word,
– Select Convert Selections and Bibliography
– Click Convert To Plain Text
– This will keep all of your citations, even if you get rid of EndNote on your computer.
